about

Tokorats The lost Album:

After I recorded the album ‘Twirligig’ in 2010, I made a collection of song’s under the title “Tokorats”. It share’s the same title as my 2017 album, but it is a completely different beast. It is a photograph of an insane time in my life. I was living life way too fast in New York, and my mental state caught on fire.

A lot of music poured out in this period and it was a lot more twisted, dark and raw than what I was previously making. I didn’t understand what was happening to me. Instead of writing song’s about hornet’s and koi fish, I was writing songs about suicide and being thrown into the sea. In addition, the instrumentals were all in the red. Everything was raw and mangled.

Eventually I crumbled in New York, and came back home to Sydney. I began my career as an artist and started releasing the music I did for Stones Throw Records the following year. I cherished these recording’s but I couldn’t “finish” them to save my life. I was just a different person after.

However, songs on the album did find life. Hodgy chopped up ‘Samurai’ for his EP, ‘Primal Boxing Ring’ turned into ‘Laguna’ on his most recent album. ‘Prepare For A New Sun’ became ‘Flesh Of Morning’ from Sine And Moon. And even ‘Misto’s Broken Shape’ turned into ‘Promises’ from Wiki’s album last year.

I forgot I had sent the album to Earl Sweatshirt. When I met him in 2014, he was familiar with all the songs and chords. It gave me the courage to get back into the studio and record Tokorats 2017 from scratch.

Tokorats 2017 used many of the song’s but were repurposed into a whole other universe. It was a great experience and it helped ease all the demon’s I felt with these recordings.

But weirdly enough, as time went on, I find myself loving these original recording’s more and more. Yes they are raw and abrasive, but they’re also warm, playful and soulful. It sound’s like an old friend to me. And in uncertain times (like right now) they give me comfort.

I hope they give you comfort too,

Love
Jonti
